Here is a list of the books I read to my class the first week of school. Click on each picture to see it on Amazon.
1. The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds
This is a fantastic book about dealing with mistakes. It sets the tone for the whole year by starting the conversation about learning and growing.
2. First Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg
Everyone has jitters on the first day of school, whether out of excitement or fear. This book puts a fun spin on the stress of the first day of school buy having the teacher be the one that is scared to come to school. It will have your students giggling in no time.
3. My Mouth is a Volcano by Julia Cook
As a teacher, we've all had a few (or a lot) of students who struggle to know when the correct time to speak is. This book helps students to manage their mouths and know the appropriate times to talk.
4. What do you do with a problem? by Kobi Yamada
Growth Mindset is the buzz in the education world right now. It's all about teaching students perseverance when faced with things they struggle with. This book talks about facing your problems no matter how bad things seem.
5. The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires
I love this book! It's about a being creative, thinking of new ways of doing things, and sticking with it even when things get hard. Students can struggle with putting themselves out there and feeling accomplished even if it doesn't turn out how they expected it to. It's a great lead into a STEM project!

I applaud you for continuing to share picture books with 5th grade students! There are so many valuable picture books to share with students of all ages. You have provided excellent choices for the first few days of school.

I hate reading! : how to get through 20 minutes of reading a day without really reading? by Beth Bacon. I used this when I taught intermediate students-they really enjoyed the story and many could relate!
I've been obsessed with picture books since I took a college class dedicated to them. I used them all year long!
DeleteI have never heard of any of these books but they all seem so cute! I love that they all teach a valuable lesson as well. Wish I could do something like this with my 10-12th graders!
ReplyDeleteThey may act like they're too cool for them, but my 11th grader loves to look through mine. :)
DeleteAmber, when I was young I recall all of my elementary teachers reading "The Hockey Sweater" to us during the first week or so of school. Probably a bit of a cultural thing, being Canadian and all. You can check it out at https://www.nfb.ca/film/sweater/
ReplyDeleteWhat a great story! I had never heard of it. It's funny how different cultures focus in on certain books. I can see so many opportunities for discussion on that book.
